There are plenty of great reviews already, so here I am adding my two cents worth. Also, I apologize in advance for adding so many quotes but I couldn't resist. Initially I thought I'd be making it short and dysfunctional commending. Now it's going to be somewhat longer and dysfunctional but still commending.

Set in the post-war environment of Lexington in the year 2021, we meet PD (Pandora) drug dealer Gordon and his best friend Carla.

“Then you’ve obviously been doing it wrong. Maybe I should give you some lessons.”

So, we’re on our merry way, not meaning any harm when we’re hit by the stoic and gorgeous assassin-spy Adam, son of Apollo aka Mr. Greek. Well, let the bitch fest begin. Correction. Let me rephrase that. Let the entertaining bitch fest begin.

“I know civilians aren’t too bright, but you’re making very little sense even for one of them.”

“Jesus, you’re fucking paranoid. Who’s going to believe that some dude who looks like the son of Apollo came crashing (view spoiler) while he waited for his super secret connections to call off a citywide manhunt?” Gordon’s voice got louder with each word. “It’s fried and you know it.”
“The son of Apollo?”
“Christ, you’re hung up on being hot. Is that the most important part of what I said? And if you must know, I’m into Greek mythology. I totally jive on all those old shows.”
Mr. Greek stared. 



“What freaking year were you born in? You can’t be much younger than me. They had all of those shows about Amazon chicks and Greek gods, gladiators…”
“You watched shows about Amazons and Greek gods.” It was more of a flat statement than a question.
“Screw you. Them bitches were fierce.”
“You’re a bizarre person.”
“Says the guy in the bodysuit.”
Mr. Greek’s mouth sunk at the sides. “It’s protective armor.”
“Like I fucking said.”

Later on we clearly expand our horizons when we’re aware that man-whore Gordon is f@cking everything that can stand on two legs. On the other hand, G-man enjoys being  freight-trained as well. I mean you can’t always pitch, you need to catch now and then, right? After Mr. Greek spared Gordon’s sorry ass, Adam is in full-on stalker mode. There’s just a little something between these two that’s worthy of a bit of blood, sweat and tears. So, let’s gear up, squabblers!

“Many people in my line of work are given status as valentine and are expected to screw whomever we’re ordered to seduce. It doesn’t bother me. It’s just a physical act. Considering some of the things I’ve done, touching another man’s dick is not exactly going to send me into a moral meltdown.”

Huffy, snappish, testy, touchy, petulant, quick-tempered, waspish, edgy, entertaining, amusing, hysterical, jolly, silly, playful, hilarious, witty, humorous, diverting, sparkling, hot, sexy, freight-train steamy...all this and then some. Did I forget anything? Hmm…wait a second…*scratches head*…yes, it was…simply great and I loved it!



The snappy and quick-witted dialogue made me laugh all the time and I was highlighting like crazy. Besides, the simmering tension between Adam and Gordon kept me on the edge. Their chemistry was truly off the charts and there's something very rewarding when you have to wait that long until you can push your nose at your Kindle (not quite literally) when they were jumping each other's bones. Finally. Boy, was it ever hot! Yet I got kinda annoyed when Adam proved to be some kind of c@ck blocker. (view spoiler) Gordon is a real ass but a very lovable ass nonetheless. My oh my, and he’s got a mouth on him, albeit a very delectable mouth. *makes kissy noises* He's all Mr. Prickly & Snappy on the outside but if need be he can be pretty mushy. I'm actually not sure if he knows what to do with his feelings.

"It's not your job to save me," Gordon replied with a harsh laugh. "I don't need a hero."
"You sure about that? You're the most careless person I've ever met. It's almost impressive."

For a killer, Adam was quite polite and decent with lots of manners. Still, Gordon had a hard time to appreciate that “asset” of Adam. After Midnight could have been perfect if these two had talked like two civil beings every so often. Gordon was pissed off all the time and Adam wasn't a prime conversationalist either. Even at the end of the story they were mouthing off at each other all the time. Maybe there will be time to develop some good manners in the sequel…hopefully. There's this proverb The quarrel of lovers is the renewal of love. Like I said in one of my updates: this must be love. 

Two people with dysfunctional lives form a dysfunctional couple. What else can one expect anyway? That’s freaking normal. 

I can't wait to read the sequel. Gimme more!

Julia and Gabriel have come a long way. They first met when Julia was seventeen years old. Eight years later, it’s safe to say that their road to a HEA wasn’t easy, and yet neither time nor circumstances and enemies could prevent them from falling in love with each other and being together now and forever. In Gabriel’s Redemption we see Gabriel working as a professor at Boston University while Julia has just finished her first year as a PhD at Harvard.

"For you, my love, I would endeavor to pluck the stars from the sky, only to shower them at your feet."
Julia pressed her hand over her heart. "How do you do that?"
"Do what?"
"Say things like that. That's beautiful."
He offered her a half-smile. "I've spent years studying poetry, Mrs. Emerson. It's in my DNA."

"This time I won't stop," he whispered, his large hand pulling up her dress in order to rest on her thigh.
"Good."
"There's no air conditioning in here, so things might get a little…hot." He stroked the skin of her thigh with the back of his hand. "I would expect nothing less, Professor."

"So how good was the sex we just had? On a scale of one to transcendent?"
"Earth-shattering and tie forgetting."

Gabriel’s Redemption is the interesting story arc to Julia and Gabriel’s mutual journey. Interesting because we see a more mature Julia—at least most of the time. When arguing she can stand up for herself and maintain her opinion. Even though Gabriel is a well-respected and established Dante specialist, Julia did her own research and is not afraid to stick to her alternative point of view. Interesting also because we get to know more about Gabriel’s difficult past and we see Julia and Gabriel talking about family planning (no spoiler, read the blurb). In fact, family and kids are major topics in Gabriel's Redemption. Also, I really loved the Superman references and in this context I enjoyed Julia and Gabriel’s banter and teasing. It was sweet and hilarious and counterbalanced a couple of other somewhat wistful scenes.

Basically Gabriel’s Redemption is about guilt and fears and making the ‘right’ choices. It’s about making amends with the past, accepting what can’t be changed or reversed anymore. But of course it’s also about love. Love eases past mistakes and paves the path to a brighter future. Life bears uncertainty and sometimes we must take risks to ensure a happier future. That’s what Julia and Gabriel experience in Gabriel’s Redemption. We also see a Gabriel who’s deeply in love with his Julia. He clearly worships the ground she walks on. Their love for each other equals breathing because it is so vital. Julia changed Gabriel's life completely and his heart beats for her and vice versa; nothing can come between these two because they’re meant for each other.

Minor quibbles
I know that we ALL believe in something or someone and that's perfectly fine. However, as a non-religious person the praying and talking about God didn't appeal to me. I found it a tad too preachy and that's not something I'm looking for in my books. Redemption is a very interesting subject, and yet it isn't necessarily linked to God and prayers. Making amends with yourself and with the people you've hurt doesn't require a faith in God or a higher power.

The Chocolate Body Paint scene left me somewhat underwhelmed because I honestly expected a longer and more sensual interlude.

Putting so many sentences in parentheses is distracting.

And last but not least the ending was somewhat too melodramatic and corny for my liking.


Gabriel's Redemption is an engagingly penned and very good conclusion to Julia and Gabriel's journey. It ties up all the loose ends nicely, and I'm pretty sure that readers who loved the first two books will also devour their final story arc. And while I did enjoy Gabriel's Redemption, Gabriel's Inferno will always be my favorite book of the trilogy.

On the one hand, I’m sad to see this trilogy come to an end. On the other hand, I’m very glad that Julia and Gabriel have found their HEA. It goes without saying that Gabriel's Redemption is a must read for every fan of The Sexy Professor.

I don't know why I'm still reading this nuisance of a book. It takes boredom to a new level. This is me being nice. :(((( 

Jay scoots closer, forcing me to move my legs so that they come around his hips and I'm between histhunderous legs. The nearness causes my heart to quicken.

Yeah, right. No comment. 

Maybe my brothers were right?
Gulp.
I realize he's studying me just as intently and I start to panic.
Shit. I need to say something and not stand here like an idiot, asking to be his next murder victim.

Man, he's scary when he yells. His height stretches up even higher and his already boulder-formed muscles expand.

His arm is so massive compared to mine you can hardly tell mine's underneath his and I hold back a giggle.

"Are you saying each scar happened separately?" The moment the last words escaped my lips I want to take them back. Jay's body ripples in anger and his veins bulge out as fiery-red colors his skin. I slide off the bar stool in a panic and take a step back.

The same fire from the truck is back in his eyes and this time it arouses an intense hunger deep inside me, a hunger for Jay, a hunger for sex so intense I ache. I've never ached down there before; it leaves me frustrated and needing Jay in a way I've never needed a man before.

His huge hand completely consumes my bare breast…

"I told myself not to fucking touch you. Your innocence comes off you like a damn perfume."

Ok, so the dude is doing Tai Chi and then she thinks…

Once we are closer I can fully see his face. It's devoid of any emotion and I try not to panic.

How many times did I have to read about her wanting to panic? For Pete's sake then panic, what the hell do I care? *facepalm*

My breathing becomes erratic and my heart is pounding out of every part of my body; I swear it's even vibrating my skin.

"Damn baby, the taste of you and me together is pure fucking heaven." That's the kinkiest thing I have ever heard, but so help me it almost makes me orgasm.

"Shall we try for a fourth?"

He makes her come SEVEN times in a row without penetrating her with his dick. WOW! I'm impressed. A fantasy come true or like my friend stated from fiction to science fiction. LOL 

I can taste myself and him together and it turns my orgasm into a bomb that shatters my body.

The ever present time references are utterly annoying, i. e.

Chapter 13, first paragraph
11:17 pm
He fondles her breast blah blah blah, then he gets out of bed and leaves the room. She feels rejected yadda, yadda, yadda.

Second paragraph.
11:29 pm
Jay comes back into the room and slides into bed yadda, yadda, yadda.

SERIOUSLY? This goes on and on and on. What do I care?

I move to my back and Jay is on his side peering down at me with unease, but I can also see a strong need for me, a need that is making the aqua and yellow-gold of his irises appear to be swirling around.

*deep breath*

Jay's voice has hardened as he comes towards me, eyes hung low, and I back up against the door.

Reminds me of a Basset dog.




I honestly don't know if I have read the same book like all the others because the high average rating of 4.55 (before I posted my review) did surprise me, to say the least. What attracted me to this book in the first place was the physically imperfect hero. I’m all for that. It’s very unfortunate, however, that nothing about Marked. Part I: The Missing Link appealed to me. The sex scenes are unerotic and poorly written and the writing in general is incredibly amateurish, awkward, clichéd and cheesy to boot. Also, the heroine is immature and irritating. To top everything off, the hero displayed his choleric temper more than once and his vocabulary is kinda limited. I won't beat around the bush, the shallow MCs didn’t interest me in the least and I was never immersed in their story. Honestly, I couldn't have cared less. Do you know the saying "Things that are useless to the world"? I'm sorry for being harsh but this is a book that belongs in that category.



I don’t want to draw this out any more, so I’m ready to give up now. Onwards…

2 disappointing and I-can't-believe-what-I-just-read stars.**Review posted November 17, 2013





I remember when I asked an author to give me some pointers for my first beta read.

Focus on the story without trying to make it your own. Does the story speak to you? Why or why not? That one question is what a beta should be able to answer honestly.

A very thoughtful and helpful advice and I'm sure that basic rule applies to every book I'm reading.

After loving Cold I was so excited for Lem and Anderson when I heard they would get their well deserved HEA. Here I am, at the (possible) end of their journey, and I'm brutally honest when I tell you that I'm shocked how shockingly bad Heart of Timber is. Brandon Shire is one of my favorite authors and I admire his writing. Yet it saddens me tremendously to admit that Heart of Timber did not speak to me at all. I'm not sure if I can explain it reasonably but I missed Brandon's compelling writing in HoT. Vast parts of HoT didn't even read like a Brandon Shire book. Some parts of the story were overly melodramatic and downright cheesy. Many of you know that he's got a distinct voice but unfortunately my search for it was fruitless. 

Heart of Timber picks up right where Cold left off with Anderson being released from prison. The book is segmented in five different parts. Release Day, Two Years Free, Three Years Free, Four Years Free and Five Years Free. I think the book was too short to provide any significant relationship development, considering they only met at 48 % for the first time after Lem had been released from prison.

Basically I liked Lem very much but he lost a lot of my sympathies at 71 % when I knew why he killed his brother.Seriously? Are you freaking kidding me??? I. Mean. Really? THIS. IS. THE. BIG. SECRET??? Ridiculous.Russell must have been one of the (view spoiler) No. F@cking. Way. Yet it happened nonetheless. It gave me the shivers in a very bad way. Not only because of what happened but mainly what led to that pathetic disaster. I know what (view spoiler)

Russell (view spoiler) That's. Not. Love. It. Is. Not. And howunrealistic, melodramatic and cheesy was that scene? I was so freaking mad, my jaw dropped on the floor.

While I liked the beginning, I soon started to dislike Anderson who was bitchy, whiny and selfish all the time. Let's not beat around the bush, I was never a fan of him in Cold but he really took the cake in HoT. Instead of being grateful to his sister Gia for being so supportive and caring, he was constantly pissed off. Don't interfere with my life blah, blah, blah. Dude, take a reality check. You obviously need someone who's taking care of you because you can't do it on your own, you stubborn jerk.

The Dom/sub fantasy was incredibly awkward at best and left me totally cold. Besides, the sex scenes in general didn't do it for me. Mainly because there was a huge lack of chemistry between these two. I'm sorry but I just didn't feel it. Also, when one of the MCs is such a nuisance, it's probably tough to feel an emotional connection anyway. In consequence, a lack of emotion equals the non-existence of chemistry, at least for me.

As already indicated, the MCs don't have any page time together up until the 48 % mark. I mean that's already a pretty huge reason for me to dislike this story and all the more so because I needed more relationship development which happened off page due to the time leaps. Still, I was willing to cut HoT and its characters some slack. It is very unfortunate that the story took a further nose dive when they had their first "real" sex scene. Sorry but I wasn't thrilled at all. I don't mind when a couple is fucking each other's brains out but please…let me feel some chemistry, just gimme something. The final sex scene under the stars was all right but to be honest, it wasn't anything to write home about either. Well, at this point of time I was probably so irritated that I couldn't have cared less.

By the way, wasn't it incredibly convenient that (view spoiler). Easy and tidy with a nice little bow.

The ending was way too rushed and the phone call (view spoiler). Like, let's hurry and do it now since I worked up the nerve to tell him. Ugh.





Overall Heart of Timber is a huge disappointment and not having been able to enjoy this book is all the worse because it was one of my most anticipated books of the year.

HOT DAMN! Shock and Awe was a real treat and for such a short read it sure packed a punch!

"I'm…I'm just impressed you can take half a Percocet and say simul…simultaneous." 





"Don't," Nick warned with a point."
Kelly quirked an eyebrow.

Nick was still pointing at him. "I will not be leveraged."
"Cuddle," Kelly said, waving his hand.
"I don't negotiate with terrorists!"

"Promise I'll get a cuddle?" Kelly asked.

"Just stop talking, Beaumont," Nick grunted. "You're like the Bermuda Triangle of morals."
Zane snorted and covered it with a cough.

First off I think it would be very favorable to read Touch & Geauxbefore you tackle Shock and Awe because there's a serious tie-in. Come to think of it, maybe it would be good to read the entire Cut & Run series before you start with Shock and Awe. After all, it's an entertaining series and so worth reading. Also, the fun goes on with S&A.

The quotes are self-evident and I don't need to extensively review the book. Suffice it to say that I enjoyed it very much. Some hot smut and a tiny touch of kink, great and witty dialogue, and two perfect dance partners made this an all-around gratifying ride. Now I could say something about instant gratification but…I won't.

Minor quibble
I didn't want it to be over so soon. On the other hand, short and compelling instead of long and boring is fine by me.

Favorite "quote":

She turned to find him standing there, one dark eyebrow arched, her blue jelly vibrator buzzing and rotating at high speed in his hand. Heat flooded her face. "Oh, my God! Where--"

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed because I sure am. Striking Distance didn't live up to my extremely high expectations. Now that I've had time to think about it for a little while, I'd go so far and say that SD is one of my biggest reading disappointments this year. 

Many of you know how much I love to add quotes to my reviews. In fact, it’s an essential part of my reviews. When I’m digging through a story looking for memorable quotes, that’s the equivalent to breathing—at least to me. Great quotes render a story unforgettable. Having said this, I’ve sorely missed a compelling dialogue and narrative in SD that would have provided more than a few fabulous quotes. Based on the outstanding and truly fantastic prologue which deserves easily five stars, I would have expected to be completely blown away. Yet it truly pains me to say that I feel anything but impressed. Funnily enough, the same happened to me when I was reading Breaking Point. After a fabulous prologue, the story and its characters didn’t achieve to captivate me and somewhere along the way my interest just petered out. I feel so extremely bummed at the moment because I wanted to love this book and I feel bad for voicing my negative feelings. I’m really sorry because I don’t intend to hurt anyone’s feelings but honesty is still the best policy and I want to give you my sincere opinion.

I don’t want to minimize or disrespect Laura’s ordeal in any way, but there was so much despair, sorrow, self-loathing and self-reproaches that I felt I could have done with less drama because it kinda suffocated the entire story. Striking Distance is a rather massive weep fest and that's exactly one of my main issues. Believe me, I love emotional reads but I don't think that so much crying will sensitize or heighten my reading experience in any way, shape or form. The (emotional) connection between a reader and the main protagonists doesn't happen solely based on dramatic events or tragedies. I guess that's where this story failed big time for me personally. Somewhere along the way Javier and Laura really lost me. My heart wasn't engaged anymore.

Besides, the writing felt too clichéd and even corny at times and another main issue of mine was the fact that the overall atmosphere of the story was too soapy for my taste. Javier calling Laura bella all the time got on my very last nerve. Also, while I'm a huge sucker for badass AND tender alpha males, Javier came across as too schmaltzy for my liking and I never fell in love with him. Since I was never able to emotionally bond with the characters, it's safe to say that compromised the entire book for me.

The (view spoiler) part was way too sappy and fell totally flat for me. Plus, I would go so far and say it was superfluous. When Laura confessed to (view spoiler) I couldn't believe that something so incredibly vital and important could have been treated within a timeframe of a few minutes. Also, I felt that basically the ending including both epilogues felt too rushed. It's difficult to put a finger on it but I didn't feel satisfied, I just needed more. Maybe it's due to the fact that the story as a whole didn't do it for me. Having said this, I guess it was a lost cause to win me over at the last moment anyhow.

My favorite books of the series are:

Striking Distance is by no means a bad book. I liked it but didn't love it and overall it just didn't push the right buttons for me. Considering how many five-star ratings I've seen already, it's probably best to ignore my point of view and I'd say this book is a must read. I'm sure that a huge majority of readers will love it. Maybe I just didn't feel "it" and this might as well be another case of it's me and not the book. Happy reading!

"We're not giving the child liquor," Jeff said, his hand wrapping protectively around RJ's head. Then he squinted at his mother, judging her honesty. "You got me drunk to shut me up?"
"Not drunk," she scoffed (…)

"Da!" RJ said enthusiastically. "Da, Da!"
"Don't get all worked up, Evan," Dan said quickly. "The books say he'll just use nonsense syllables, and (view spoiler)

"But nothing," he repeated, "Nothing to do with you. Absolutely. It's just…" He turned toward Jeff and said, "I want us to (view spoiler)

"You weren't wrong about the (view spoiler) But you weren't right, either. When you said the (view spoiler) don't matter, compared to RJ? I don't think that was right. Because the (view spoiler) are us…not the three of us, as separate people; the three of us together, the way we're going to raise RJ. And you guys…you maybe don't know so well, but trust me…parents matter. Parents are important, and being parents is our biggest, hardest job, and (view spoiler) and are raising RJ together…that matters."

I don't need to review One Bright Star. Suffice it to say that I was happy to meet Dan, Evan and Jeff again. RJ the toddler (no spoiler, read the blurb) was a sweet extra, the icing on the cake. Seriously, seeing and feeling their love for each other gives me the warm fuzzies. Sweet. Oh, yes, One Bright Star is a nice and shiny little read.
Reading this short novella is incentive to look forward to a tranquil and reflective time that's called Christmas. A time that you should spend with your family and loved ones.

Recommended read. In fact, I'd recommend you to read the entire series and don't forget to read the books in order.

It's been a while, so I'm going to make this short and sweet. 

Violet is meeting her girlfriends to celebrate her prospective motherhood. It's a loud and fun encounter with lots of witty and endearing banter. You can expect a couple of very "appropriate" and thoughtful gifts. Vi's husband Mac is working and (view spoiler) So, when Mac comes back home Vi is ready to dish out some sweet steamy revenge. She can count on Mac who hasn't any objections.

In The Baby Shower the fun part goes hand in hand with the HOT and kinky sex. My oh my, whenever I have the pleasure to meet Mac again I have to pay attention not to have a stroke because that man sure knows how to accelerate my heart rate. He's simply delicious and so incredibly likable lickable. I would love to check out every inch of his delectable body. *makes slurpy noises* Mac alone is reason enough to whip out my fan. I have to confess it's beyond titillating to see such a huge sexy hunk of a man on his knees and catering to his Mistress' every need and desire. *drool*

The Baby Shower is a very entertaining and sexy little number, compellingly written and deserves a place on my shelf best-freebies. This is a must read for every fan of the Nature of Desire series.

My first thoughts after finishing the novella:

I have absolutely nothing--and I mean NOTHING--positive to say about Blue Dreams. Honestly, this was an awful nightmare and I want to remove every letter of this pathetic novella from my brain. I think I need to bleach it. I f@cking hate everything about it. Neither the despicable characters nor the storyline and definitely not the poor writing didn't do it for me. I am so f@cking mad at the moment that I can't even form a coherent thought, let alone a normal sentence.

I try to make this short. Let's get started.

I absolutely HATE drama, drama, drama, drama, drama, drama, drama. Sob fest, sob fest, sob fest, sob fest, sob fest. It's safe to say that Blue Dreams provided exactly that in abundance. Besides, I can't approve of their childish and embarrassing behavior. WHINY characters are NEVER appealing. If anything, they're a HUGE turn off.
So called "heroes" who are running away on a regular basis are going to get on my verrrrrrrry last nerve, and shouting matches that lead to nothing at all are a big no go too. Besides, panicked (grown) men who cackle around like scared chicks are not relatable either. In fact, it's f@cking pathetic. I was never for the life of me able to bond with the four MCs. The more I read the more shocked I got, considering that I really loved Nick and Derek in the prequel Split. What the hell happened? I had a hard time to wrap my mind around the fact that Split and Blue Dreams have been written by the same author. Neither the characters nor the writing did remind me of Split. While Split is such a wittingly penned novel, the sequel Blue Dreams missed the mark completely. Blue Dreams is shockingly bad and the writing overly cheesy. Welcome to Sapsville!

Let's talk about the ménage. Come to think of it, that's actually not possible because it happened OFF PAGE. There was a bland sex scene between (view spoiler) The only thing that I can approve of is the fact that (view spoiler) wasn't allowed to play along because he's (view spoiler) Thanks for small favors. On the other hand, it shows how jealous and possessive (view spoiler) is. And I sure as hell didn't like how (view spoiler) Don't get me wrong. I have no problem whatsoever with a threesome or a foursome when everybody involved is on the same page and it's only sex. However, what led to the ménage was simply deplorable and absurd. As I saw it, (view spoiler) That's so not cool!!!

The nickname baby boy gives me the creeps and a giggling man is a HUGE NO GO. Plus, the term LOVELY can only end in a disaster when it's related to male characters. And after mentioning to the nth degree how freaking beautiful Nick is, I really got that too. You know I'm not stupid. The day I don't have to see Ethan and Myles anymore cannot come soon enough. Also, right now I'm in such a bad place that I don't want to see Nick and Derek anymore either. I'm going to buy you all a one way ticket to Mars. And we all know that means a mission without return because once you're there you won't be able to fly back to Mother Earth. Have a safe trip!

The ending of Split was fine by me. Some will look at it as a HFN and others will take it as a HEA. I know it’s a daily challenge to keep a relationship healthy, strong and interesting. Nothing is ever perfect after all. Besides, it’s safe to say that romance novels don’t always reflect real life because (love) life isn’t only about hearts and flowers and a hot hunk. Yet it was totally needless to f@ck everything up in Blue Dreams. This novella is an overwritten, f@cked up drama and massive weep fest par excellence. It's simply disgusting. 

What’s the purpose of this whole mess? Giving (view spoiler)WTF? Do I have to assume that without this crappy novella there wouldn’t have been a sequel to Nick and Derek’s story? Did we really need a sequel? Questions over questions and I don’t care at all if I’ll ever get any answers. IMO Blue Dreams tainted and stained Split irrevocably and ruined a beautiful book for me. As a matter of fact, that's the saddest aspect of this whole mess because I wish…I just wish I hadn't read Blue Dreams and I wish I hadn't touched Split either. What a freaking disaster. I'm at a point where I don't even want to read the sequel Red Awakening. Yup, I hope that Derek is going to wake up and some jerks need to grovel big time.

Nick's eyes are stunning. Icy blue like the Northern sky.

The color purple is meaningful.


The main protagonists Derek and Nick differ greatly in their characterizations and that's exactly what I found so interesting about them. Derek is a bit shy and pretty quiet. There's a dreamlike quality about his mind and he's often absent-minded and lives in his own little purple world. And then there is Nick. Quick-tempered, angry and a tad dangerous. A ripped rebel with blond hair and piercing blue eyes. He's (view spoiler) and growing up is a struggle. One day he (view spoiler)

The story is told from Derek's POV and alternates between past and present. When it's done right I don't mind the back and forth and I like to see characters grow up from childhood to adulthood. In this case, however, I must say that less is sometimes more. Meaning, I would have preferred to spend much more time in the here and now, seeing Derek and Nick's relationship evolve. Unfortunately it never happened. That's my first big issue. Not nearly enough page time for Derek and Nick as a couple. What was there just couldn't satisfy my needy and greedy little heart. Though what really stands out for me is the witty and compelling writing and of course the likable MCs. Also, Aunt Fran was truly a great bonus and I did appreciate her appearance very much. She acted like a surrogate mother to Derek and I was glad to see that someone really loved him when (view spoiler).

Also, I'm not sure if an eleven-year-old boy is skilled (and old) enough to write so maturely. Derek sure was wise beyond his years. In any event, I really enjoyed his diary records; they made me smile and laugh frequently. Yet at the same time I felt a bit guilty for having had such a good time because Derek's journal revealed so much sadness, lack of self-confidence and heartache. 

Boone is obsessed with girls. In kindergarten, he'd have pockets full of bubble gum and coax the girls into showing him their privates. He thinks I don't know that, but I used to watch him do it. It's funny, none of the girls ever asked for the gum afterward.
I ended up chewing a lot of gum that year.

I grew up, and then caught a deadly virus called adulthood.

"Be good," he said as he walked out the front door. "I'll call you tonight. Have a good time with your folks."
A good time with my folks.
That's like asking me to enjoy guilt-free anal sex.

"Derek! I worry about your soul!"
Yes yes, I know. So do I.
I'd like to know where it went.

Boone laughed. "You should see your face right now. You still have a thing for him, don't you?"

My second main issue was the sex. I'm going to give it to you straight. It was anticlimactic. I mean these two have such great chemistry and the entire build-up almost killed me. Anticipation, anyone? The air was blazing hot and the need and desire was so palpable and then after a pretty good foreplay session…this…I mean...seriously…this is all I get?

Now let me say a few words about Derek's relationship with Nathan. Derek really annoyed me and I wanted to yell at him to wake up already. He must have some serious hang-ups and an inferior complex when he can spend two years with a self-righteous, thoughtless and manipulative asshole who used him as his boy toy. Do this, do that. Wear this, wear that. Blow me. Let me f@ck you etc. The narcissistic Nathan exploited Derek from A to Z. Have a great time (view spoiler) you jerk!

Despite my issues, a lot about Split is like a breath of fresh air and I'm definitely going to read more by this author.

After having read and extremely despised Blue Dreams, I'm not sure if I'm willing to buy more books by Mel Bossa. I truly wish I hadn't read Blue Dreams and in a way the author achieved to ruin a wonderful book (Split) for me. Sad.

After a horrible attack about a year ago, Chloe suffers from panic attacks. Her sanctuary was branded. She's always been a woman full of life, joy and laughter. Her friend Gen said over a year ago:

"If anyone could live on the curve of a rainbow, it would be you."

Sadly that's gone now. During a panic attack one night, she called a number that she'd treasured for many months. It's Brendan's. She met him at Tyler and Marguerite's wedding. Listening to Brendan's voice, to the easy honesty in his words, calms her tremendously. They end up having some titillating phone sex but at the same time Chloe enjoys their interesting conversation. 



Chloe is feeling things that have been buried for a long time.

"Chloe."(…)"Tell me again what you want. I need to hear it. What do you want?"
"I want to be me again. I want to feel safe."

Though there's a problem. Brendan is the perfect male submissive and Chloe is not part of his D/s world. Brendan was in uncharted territory, pursuing someone who wasn't accustomed to his submissiveness.



There's one particular aspect of Branded Sanctuary that I LOVED beyond words. Tyler and Marguerite. They're making quite an impact here and it was a great pleasure to see them again. Every time I read about Tyler my knees are getting weak and I want to drool in his wake. Chloe asked Tyler:

"Will you teach me how to use a gun?"
"Chloe." His voice had a rich timbre, flavored with a cultured Georgia drawl. "You take flies out of Tea Leaves in a cup. You apologize when you kill mosquitoes sucking blood out of your skin."(…)
"I know, Tyler. I'm just so afraid…of being afraid, and I don't know how to stop."

"You're so very dear to us, Chloe. Give yourself time. If you still want to learn how to use a gun in a month or two, I'll teach you. But like most things, it's a decision best made when you're in the right frame of mind for it. Until then, I'll shoot anybody that needs shooting for you."
"Just the kind of friend I need." She stared up into his handsome face, the expression that looked as if it could weather any storm. "Can I use you for the other thing that friends are known for?"
"Sure, little flower," he said gently, his pet name for her. He curved his hand around her neck, caressing her cheek as she laid her head back on his chest and let herself be held some more.

Tyler. The Southern GENTLEMAN and a GENTLE man. *swoon*


MORE TYLER! Whew. Handsome, hot as hell, strong, compassionate, perceptive, gentle and intuitive…and he exudes a commanding presence from head to toe. How that man takes care of his loved ones is just amazing. He was really sweet with Chloe, like a loving father figure. Sorry for gushing so much but I'm simply starstruck by him. I also apologize for adding so many quotes but when it comes to Tyler I love to go way overboard. *makes kissy noises*

He strode across the lawn, relaxed and easy, a feast for feminine eyes with damp muscled flesh and well-fitted jeans. Yet he still managed to project the Southern gentleman even in the casual dress, amber eyes focused on them as he approached.
"You two make a provocative and lovely picture. Giving those boys all sorts of ideas."
Chloe grinned. "Well, tell them to meet us all down at the hot tub, then."
Tyler smiled, slow and sexy, and her heart did a somersault, despite herself. (…)

Tyler muttered an oath. "Fine. Put them on maximum speed," he told the operator. He cocked a brow at Marguerite. "So this gets you hot, hmm?"
"Volcanic," she returned, a sparkle glimmering in her gaze. "If you don't miss."

"Keep talking, jarhead." Tyler looked up at the stuffed animals and other toys just above his head and arched a brow at Marguerite. "What do you want?"
"Nothing hanging on those hooks," she responded, making Jack laugh. Giving her a sexy smile, Tyler pulled down a toy anyway. He presented her with a black stuffed gorilla bearing an armful of silk red roses and a heart that said I'm yours.

When he leaned back, his eyes were as kind and compassionate as they were stern and uncompromising earlier. "Forgiven, little flower."
"You're really scary, you know. I guess you've convinced terrorists to give up their plots and everything, so you have practice."
"The women in my life require a different approach." Humor rippled across his handsome face. "The terrorists are far less work."

Chloe accepted Tyler's ever present handkerchief with a tremulous half-chuckle. "I keep messing up all your handkerchiefs."
"Don't worry. I have plenty more. And a devoted little wife who washes and irons them for me."
Marguerite gave him a lifted brow, the slight look of disdain he adored. "You must be keeping her locked in the basement, because I haven't seen her. Polygamist."

BTW, the sexy interlude between Tyler, Marguerite and Chloe was sensual and really beautiful. Loved it!

Brendan talks to Marguerite about Chloe.

"The joyful Chloe still exists, but she's facing that dark side now. No one I know is more prepared than you to guide someone out of darkness, Brendan, because your own demons have never overwhelmed your light. An Arthurian knight in truth. You might best serve Chloe's needs right now by taking the reins. Show her how to drive the horse before handing them over. You understand?"

I truly admire Marguerite because even after having faced and survived unspeakable evil, she's still full of strength and wisdom and she cares deeply about those she loves.

"We place a great deal of emphasis on knowledge, understanding, comprehension," Marguerite continued. "But in a truly tolerant world, things don't always need to make sense to us to be accepted, or to become a vital part of our lives."
"Like the biblical fruit, the knowledge of good and evil. Kind of screwed ourselves there."
"Yes. Because understanding good and evil is intuitive, not scientific. We both know that."

"You learn to do without the walls, Chloe. The point isn't building them, but building a life that is so much of who you are, nothing can destroy it. If you're lucky, when you figure that out, you find - or discover you've already found - a person who will help you keep the darkness at bay. Someone who gives you the strength to live as who you are, not a prisoner of your own mind."

I'm glad I did a reread because I loved the first half of Branded Sanctuary as much as I did the second half. I love, love Joey's writing and I'm always mesmerized how she defines BDSM. As a matter of fact, the philosophical and psychological aspects of BDSM go hand in hand and her stories go way beyond the sexual encounter of Dom/sub. I always enjoy her profound and thoughtful dialogue as well as the compelling narrative.



Chloe isn't a natural Domme but she is an extraordinary young woman, someone in emotional pain trying to regain control of herself. And Brendan is the exceptional submissive, someone who will help her to deal with the pain. He will also help her to find the joy and laughter again. Brendan is full of compassion, kindness and strength; but also full of thoughtfulness and blissful quiet. Trust and surrender is what all this is about. Those two elements are at the core of every relationship, and you don't have to practice D/s to understand that. Marguerite said to Chloe:

"Done the right way, Brendan will respond the same way to a command to give his Mistress a foot massage as he would to being whipped." At that astounding statement, she leaned forward. "Some subs need the restraints and caning to be fulfilled. But not him. How much D/s can or can't adversely affect a relationship has a great deal to do with the two people involved."

Brendan is quite unique. While he's a level ten pain threshold, his main focus is all about a woman's willingness to let him care for her; to serve her and cater to her every need. He doesn't need excruciating pain to be happy as a sub. Thus, he needs someone who understands what his submissiveness is truly about. That's exactly the challenge Chloe has to face, not whether or not she's a natural Domme.



Brendan teaches drama at a college but he's also a fabulous swimmer.

As he came up beside her and she looped her arms around his neck, she pressed her mouth to his underwater, something she'd always wanted to do. She laughed into his mouth at the way his arms curled around her, how she could tangle her legs over the backs of his thighs, and float and spin, and listen to that silence underwater that was somehow so…full.

Branded Sanctuary is not a book for readers who love to read about whips, chains and lots of physical pain. It was such a nice change for once because the BDSM elements are rather light. There's lots of romance, sensuality and eroticism. Plus, there's so much kindness, gentleness and real depth palpable in this story. It goes without saying that I liked ALL the multilayered characters and the close bond they shared.

And while I'm not a member of the D/s world, I truly enjoyed the Nature of Desire series because the stories give me a feeling of family membership and true values. It's like coming home. There's love, warmth, understanding and care and the people in Joey's stories look out for each other. They're not only friends, they're family.

Brendan is Chloe's sanctuary, the port in the storm, the ship she can trust. While doing my reread I just realized that Brendan is not only Chloe's sanctuary, he is also her branded sanctuary. Once again the title offers plenty of interesting connotations.

"Even then. I still want you. Heart, body, soul, everything from your deepest thought to your most casual gesture. I want to see all of it, be a part of all of it."

Brendan, Tyler, Marguerite and Gen helped Chloe to deal with her pain and fears in order to keep the darkness at bay. The light shone down on her again and Chloe was ready to embrace the joys of life such as laughter, happiness and love. The butterflies in her belly are back and she's ready to share them with someone she loves. Brendan.



Brendan's submissiveness to Chloe is a sacred act of devotion and there's no need at all for chains and whips and lots of physical pain. 
We think that subs must be weak but that's not true. There's real strength in Brendan's gentleness and kindness.

I found the reader advisory a bit odd. Brief ménage encounter? Did I miss anything? There was a brief encounter between Tyler, Marguerite and Chloe. But there was no sex involved. And there was no sex/kissing between two women either.

The name Brendan comes from Brendanus, a Latin form of the Irish name Bréanainn (which I think is beyond beautiful). That's Welsh and it means (view spoiler).

Mac wears a well-groomed beard…






Homicide detective Mackenzie Nighthorse is working undercover as a sexual submissive at The Zone. The police are hunting down a Mistress who's killing young, submissive men. Vi wants to understand his mind and she wants to crawl into his soul. Although Mac tries to fight her off, he has to cave in eventually. At the same time he has to face his fears. Their relationship is a bond of trust, and that trust should never be betrayed. Mac always felt D/s was about strength and power. But he's wrong because it's about trust and power exchange. Besides, it's about surrender for both of them and they must be open and honest about what they want and expect from each other.



Mackenzie (Mac) Nighthorse is simply GORGEOUS! 

Forty-three years old, 6 feet four inches tall, 220 pounds packed with muscles, broad shoulders, a body built like a football player's that emanates raw sexuality as all get out. His nickname is The Oak coz he's got a steadfast nature and works best under pressure. Straight nose, silver eyes, dark straight eyebrows, silky dark hair interwoven with white and silver. YUMMY! Need I say more? Oh yes, I wanna lick him all over! He goes straight on my shelf being-mature-is-sexy.

"Being violent is easy, too easy." He brushed it off. "Holding back, being gentle, restraining your strength when it's not needed, that takes--"

It goes without saying that he made this story for me. I love his name that seemed to be a pun (stud, Vi's play zone, equestrian sports), but his physique and character are absolutely stunning! Whew. He's a man's man, for sure. In fact, he's beyond sexy and totally mesmerizing. Mac combines all the mouth-wateringly hot attributes that I love to see in my heroes and to top everything off, he knows how to cook. Oh my, you should have seen him in his super tight jeans, topless, feet bare, standing in front of the counter chopping veggies. Sheesh, reel it in Baba. Mac DESERVES FIVE STARS ALONE.

"Take the wine." She lifted it. "And drink. Drink it all, until the last swallow, and then give me that last swallow from your mouth."

"Perhaps next time I have wine in my mouth," he murmured against her lips, "you'll let me put your legs on my shoulders, and I'll put my mouth on your pussy, slip my tongue in your c@nt and let all that warm, red wine run down inside. Mix with your sweet taste and drink from that."

I remember when I read Natural Law for the very first time I couldn't believe that such a fabulous hunk--such an ALPHA--would submit to a little pixie. I had a hard time dealing with the fact that Mac enjoyed going on his knees for a Mistress and accepting whatever she dished out to him. After doing another reread I believe him. Mac wants a woman (in this case Vi) to dominate him in the bedroom; it's what he desires and needs to be happy. 
Yet he feels it's a man's responsibility to protect a woman and keep her safe from harm. Violet is everything to Mac--Mistress, lover, friend, woman. It's humbling and exhilarating all at once but it also terrifies him. He doesn't want to be vulnerable in front of her. So, while Mac is all alpha on the job and in other aspects of his life, it gives him great pleasure to submit to Vi's bidding.

I must confess that I didn't like Vi when I read Natural Law for the first time, and even now I couldn't warm up to her. I don't like her. Period. She's too harsh, even mean at times. The scene where she (view spoiler) was hard to stomach. Mac didn't want it and yet she did it anyway. Funnily enough, I really liked her in Tyler and Marguerite's story Ice Queen, Mirror of My Soul and Tyler Tied Up. It's odd because it's like swapping sides. Tyler didn't sweep me off my feet in Natural Law but he really catapulted me on cloud nine when I was reading his love story where he found his soulmate Marguerite.

"It's like going into a temple and seeing the sacred relic there," she said, her voice still no louder than his held breath. "Wanting to touch it. Not because someone told you not to, though there is that." Her lips curved slightly. "But because you can sense a living presence in it, just beneath the surface of the elements. And you know, if you can just touch it, really feel it, feel what it means, what its soul is made of, then you can be part of it. Forever connected, never alone."

"I'm all yours, sugar," he said. "My soul is yours."

After they ate, he curled up behind her on the bed in his room, stroking her hair until she fell asleep watching out the window as the moon rose over the marsh. When she woke, its light was streaming in. She held her hand up to it, watched the play of silver on her pale skin.

A large hand lifted into her vision, entwined its fingers with her own, and she felt Mac's broad chest pressed into her shoulder blades.
And I'm not alone.

"It was something I didn't know, didn't understand. Not until I met you. I was looking for you. My Mistress. Mine," he said fiercely. "It's you. You're the beginning and the end of it all for me. The reason for it. I know it doesn't make sense after less than a week. But I know it. I just do."

The chemistry between Mac and Vi is palpable and strong, their love story interesting and emotional and Joey's writing is as always great and engaging. I loved the beautiful and emotionally-charged epilogue. To be honest, I didn't particularly care about the mystery. As it was, I was entirely focused on Mac and the evolving relationship between him and Vi. If you love FemDom stories then JWH's Nature of Desire series is a must read.

"It's over, Violet," he said, and his voice was rough. "Don't let it take any part of what we were from us." He caught her hand from his stomach and bit her fingers, not gently. "I'm yours. I never stopped being yours."

I would like to say this…



…for many wonderful reading hours. Tate will always be one of my favorite heroes. Ever.

But. Yes, there is a 'but'.

Over the years reading tastes change. As I see it, mine must have changed pretty drastically because I don't enjoy KA's books anymore. Simply put, it's obvious that I have moved on to something that appeals much more to me. As a matter of fact, it's a natural process that I, as a reader, need and want to evolve. I won't give you a rundown of my list of issues. I will, however, quote a reader who asked me this after I DNFd the book: "Oh no, what happened?" That's exactly the crux of the matter. Nothing happened. I'm not willing anymore to read the same book with the same characters over and over again. Whilst reading Jagged I got the impression that I have read the same story before. Sure, the editing is much better than before, yet the characterizations, the speech and behavior patterns are the same. I want, however, distinct characters and somewhat more variety when it comes to story lines. I just think that diversity is something incredibly positive, something that will keep me happy as a reader. It is also something that will keep me reading for many years to come. Unfortunately, I had to realize that I won't get that by reading KA's books.

No worries, I know there are thousands of happy KA fans out there and that's perfectly fine by me. I hope, however, that you will respect my way of looking at things. Thank you.

Jagged was my 21st book by KA and I guess there is this specific moment when you know it's time to move on. I can reflect and reminisce all I want but in the end the result will be the same. Reading is always a matter of my personal enjoyment, a matter of me having fun and immersing myself in a story and its characters. And when a book is outstanding, then it's also about me soaking up many magical moments that will stay with me for a long time; when I'm lucky enough then these special moments will stay with me forever. With that said, it saddens me to say that the magic is gone and Jagged has been my last book by Kristen Ashley. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed. Believe me, I am. I guess this short summary of how I feel must serve as my swan song. Besides, I think that deep down in my heart I've already moved on after my little disaster with Creed. Hence, Jagged is just proof that I made the right decision.

It was a beautiful dance as long as it lasted.

I know you can read Striking Distance without having read First Strike. I think, however, it’s like eating a piece of cake without the icing on top. I mean you just have to have it, right? It’s so much tastier and it can enhance your satisfaction tremendously. I’ve read the prologue of Striking Distance a while ago already and I must say it’s one of the best I’ve read in a long, long time. Therefore the anticipation as well as my expectations are very HIGH. It goes without saying that I was absolutely keen on meeting the gorgeous and passionate Navy SEAL Javier and the beautiful investigative journalist Laura in First Strike. And by reading Pamela’s first erotic novella I could somewhat quench my thirst, yet on the other hand, I’m on edge to get my hands on SD as soon as possible. The novella ends on a rather huge cliffie, but it’s one that I expected and serves as the perfect introduction to Striking Distance.

While reading this novella you should listen to the Italian version of (view spoiler) performed by (view spoiler) The song is very apt. Awww, the feelings…*goosebumps*

Even though (view spoiler) Javier won't quit. They will see each other again (view spoiler) After all, Javier is tried, tested and dedicated.

If you’re not into plenty of steamy, sweaty and naughty activitiessex against a wall, in bed and in the bathroom, then don’t read it. However, if the answer is a straight yes, then all I can say is naughty happy reading!


P.S. I suspect the sex in Striking Distance will be more about(view spoiler) Can't wait to see what'll happen. I expect plenty of emotions.
